The thing about meditation is that it does help us connect with Spirit but it does not require any formal ritual, which is the thing that scares a lot of people off. Meditation simply involves quieting the thoughts in your mind, and you can do that however you see fit.
My favorite way to meditate is to grab my cup of coffee in the morning and find a comfortable chair. Before the coffee is consumed and I am still somewhat tired, I close me eyes and zone out. I ask my guides what they would like me to know for the coming day, to see if any reminders and ideas pop into my thoughts. Having a paper and pen nearby can be helpful but is not necessary.
Sometimes I hear a phrase, like this morning I heard "Money is coming," and I knew it was a simple sentence to remind me that abundance is always flowing toward us, as long as we aren't focusing on lack. It didn't necessarily mean I should run out and buy a lottery ticket, but that would have been okay, too. No, I instinctively knew that it was a general statement of spiritual truth that we are protected and watched over in all ways, that just like the sparrow in the Bible, we need not worry about anything.
If I have a specific request, then as soon as my brain is empty of thoughts and I am open to receive guidance, I clearly put the question "out there." I can think it or speak it. When I am alone in the house I like to speak it so that it is stated very clearly. Then I am still and listen with my inner ear. If words and ideas pop into my mind that I hadn't consciously thought of, I know it is my guidance speaking.
Sonia Choquette teaches the idea of saying to ourselves something like this: "If I had guidance, what would it say to me right now?" And then be silent and don't try to force anything. If it sounds like your own advice, it may very well be from your own brain. If it sounds like something new and different that you hadn't thought of, it is most likely genuine guidance.
Most practitioners and teachers of meditation talk about breath a lot. I can't meditate with breaths in and breaths out. It makes me feel like I am hyperventilating! But it is important not to hold one's breath, so I start out with a couple of big breaths and then stop thinking about my breath.
You know all about the coloring craze for adults, right? It truly is a form of relaxation and yes, even meditation. You can grab a coloring book and start coloring, with or without a specific request in mind, and you may feel answers to questions coming into your mind.
Walking is a form of meditation, as is housework, needlework, painting, anything that takes you a bit outside of yourself so that your mind is quieted and you are open to receiving guidance.
That is the idea in a nutshell. Quiet the chatter by silently releasing it and not arguing with it, focus on something enjoyable, or nothing at all, and let thoughts wander into your mind that are not from your conscious brain.
